Chiseled Edge Countertops - a Unique Natural Beauty

Chiseled Edge Countertops - a Unique Natural Beauty

When it comes to selecting the perfect granite countertop for your home, you’ve got a lot of options to choose from. Besides picking color, style, finish, and making sure that your new granite countertop matches your cabinets and other fixtures, you also have to choose an edge for your granite. There are several edge options to choose from when selecting granite countertops, including bullnose, bevel, and straight edges. But there is another option that will add unique character to your kitchen and that edge is called " chiseled edge" or "raw edge". Chiseled edge will bring a very different look to your granite countertops than bullnose, bevel, or other edges, lending your kitchen a more natural or rustic appearance. This obviously isn’t right for every kitchen, but it can be surprisingly versatile, bringing a more organic feeling to kitchens that might otherwise feel too cold or industrial, or accentuating beautifully more warm, rugged, or rustic décor. Chiseled edged granite is also perfect for outdoor kitchens, where its rugged and natural appearance make it an ideal fit. While the chiseled/raw edge may make granite countertops look like the slabs were just snapped off, if that was what actually happened they would make a much less aesthetically satisfying and much less practical finish. So instead, the raw edge effect is created by chiseling the edges off the granite slab, with a tool or machine. This creates a ragged but also sufficiently uniform edge that looks natural but is safe from sharp spurs or other imperfections.

Our History

We have been in business since 1989 and have done 1000's + granite slab countertops for customers, both residential and commercial. We are a proud vendor for Pechanga, local realtors and car dealerships in the Temecula Valley, to name a few!

The owner, Kevin was educated in Business and Construction and in 1978 he opened Southwest Tile which quickly grew into a successful business in the Tri-Valley area. In 1989 Southwest Tile was renamed Southwest Granite specializing in all natural stone fabrication & installation. Kevin has grown and expanded in the industry with a background not only the the tile industry but continues to educate himself in residential and commercial building construction and ordnance codes. As a young man he grew up in a family business of interior design, making Kevin a natural when it comes to design conception to completion. In early 2000 while running Southwest Granite Kevin worked as a home inspector and project manager for Starbucks. But his true love is giving his time and energy one hundred percent to his business and customers at Southwest Granite.

Throughout the years in business he has mentored others who were wanting to work in the Natural Stone field. One of them now has a Natural Stone business in Temecula. He enjoys working with and sharing his knowledge and craft with others because of his love and dedication to the field of manufacturing Natural Stone.

We are happy to give back and pay it forward to our customers, friends and neighbors. This year,we celebrate 30 years serving the Temecula Valley and we couldn't be more excited! We are honored to have been given the business opportunities and to have grown in the industry as Temecula Valleys premier Natural Stone Manufacturer. We look forward to many more years serving our friends and neighbors with quality and craftsmanship!

Thank you!

Homeowners Love Granite Kitchen Countertops

Are you planning a kitchen remodel in the near future? Are you considering Granite for your countertops? No matter what material you are considering we will give you the reasons why granite is and has been the popular choice among homeowners. Two well know reasons are because of their natural beauty and minimal maintenance. Keep reading to learn why more and more homeowners are installing granite countertops in their homes.

Granite Slabs are Unique

For homeowners looking for a countertop surface design that’s completely unique to their home, granite can be a great material. All granite slabs are unique.
Granite comes in many different colors to fit your design preferences and the interior design of your home. For example, black granite countertops give your kitchen a touch of sophistication and luxury.

Adds Value to Your Home

Whether you are looking to sell your home in the near future or you are planning on staying in your home for many years to come, there are many benefits of granite countertops. Not only do granite countertops add a classic ambiance to any kitchen, but they are also attractive to prospective home-buyers. For example, if a home-buyer is looking at two similar houses in the same price bracket, they are more likely to choose the home with newly-installed granite countertops
According to HGTV, minor kitchen remodels (like granite countertop installation) offer a return on investment of approximately 92.9%. To determine if granite countertops are the best kitchen remodel for your money, we recommend that you contact us to discuss your options. Replacing kitchen countertops can help improve the look of your home for years to come.
Low Maintenance Countertops
Maintenance for granite countertops is minimal. Simply clean your countertops with hot water and mild soap. Since granite is less porous than other countertop materials, such as marble, the chance of staining is significantly less. However, if you do stain the surface of your granite countertop, we recommend that you make a paste out of baking soda and water and gently try to scrub the stain out with a soft washcloth. This simple trick takes care of most granite countertop stains.
Sanitary Surfaces
Granite countertops are resistant against bacterial contamination. This means that you can prepare and cook with confidence, knowing that your family is protected from strains of bacteria living on your countertop surfaces. Of course, it’s also important to exercise food safety habits, such as cleaning kitchen countertops before and after use meal preparation and cooking.

Granite Myths

The longer something is popular, the easier it is for myths to grow about it. This is certainly true for granite. As granite continues to stand the test of time as a favorite for countertops so too do the myths grow about whether or not it is the best natural stone material on the market. Addressing the myths certainly won’t solve that dilemma – there are many natural stone countertops to choose from and all of them have their own attributes, but it will set the record straight.

1) Granite is trendy. There is a difference between trendy and popular. Trendy implies that something is currently in style but that its status is easily changeable, like the shifting trends in runway fashions or technology. The "trend" toward granite countertops, if one can call it such, has lasted much longer than a trend. It has spanned decades.Granite countertops have become a staple in today's homes.A sign of sophisticated upgrade or solid investment n functional home decor. For those who worry that granite will become a sign that their home is"dated", consider that granite is a material that lasts a lifetime. It doesn't age or become less beautiful over time. These are not attributes of trends but rather qualities homeowners continue to look for when they choose materials for their homes.

2) Granite is expensive. It is true that there are less expensive alternatives to granite, such as prefab, laminate or tile. However, given the continuing popularity of granite, it is actively harvested from quarries around the world. This abundant supply translates to relatively lower costs to the consumer in comparison to natural stones that are more rare or difficult to access. As granite has remained a top choice for so long, the costs per square foot have continued to go down. Additionally, granite is an investment that will continue to pay returns as it increases a home’s resale appeal and will not need to be replaced or repaired when cared for properly.

3) Granite is high maintenance. Granite is stain, scratch, heat and chemical resistant. It is among the hardest countertop materials available and is not easily damaged. To maintain it, sealing is important; however, contrary to common myths, granite does not need to be sealed often. In fact, there are sealants that give a lifetime warranty against staining with just one single application. Some granites don’t require any sealing at all. On a daily basis, dusting, wiping up spills and using potholders or trivets are the extent of maintenance and these are common to most countertop materials.

4) Granite is the most beautiful. Not all myths are false, and granite is certainly beautiful. The crystals within this natural stone formed over thousands of years, catching and reflecting light. Granite is rich and complex with flecks and pebbles in a wide variety of colors and patterns. Each slab is uniquely made by Mother Nature. Whether granite is the most beautiful of natural stones is a matter of taste, but granite is undeniably striking in any application - as countertops, wall cladding and even flooring – and with any finish, from highly polished or honed the beauty of granite is timeless.

Myths aside, granite remains Southwest Granite's most popular surface choice because of its durability and beauty. It may be trendy, but it’s a proven trend that is here to stay. It is a safe and smart investment for your home that will last a lifetime and beyond.
