Chiseled Edge Granite Countertops Rock!

"Chiseled Edge" also known as "Raw Edge" is a Natural Beauty

When it comes to selecting the perfect granite countertop for your home, you’ve got a lot of options to choose from. Besides picking color, style, finish, and making sure that your new granite countertop matches your cabinets and other fixtures, you also have to choose an edge for your granite. There are several edge options to choose from when selecting granite countertops, including bullnose, bevel, and straight edges. But there is another option that will add unique character to your kitchen and that edge is called " chiseled edge" or "raw edge".
Chiseled edge will bring a very different look to your granite countertops than bullnose, bevel, or other edges, lending your kitchen a more natural or rustic appearance. This obviously isn’t right for every kitchen, but it can be surprisingly versatile, bringing a more organic feeling to kitchens that might otherwise feel too cold or industrial, or accentuating beautifully more warm, rugged, or rustic décor. Chiseled edged granite is also perfect for outdoor kitchens, where its rugged and natural appearance make it an ideal fit.
While the chiseled/raw edge may make granite countertops look like the slabs were just snapped off, if that was what actually happened they would make a much less aesthetically satisfying and much less practical finish. So instead, the raw edge effect is created by chiseling the edges off the granite slab, with a tool or machine. This creates a ragged but also sufficiently uniform edge that looks natural but is safe from sharp spurs or other imperfections.

Making your kitchen countertop functional for you and your family!

The trend in kitchen countertops are big kitchen island with no raised countertops. A solid flat countertop not only flows well it makes your kitchen look larger. But that look is not for everyone!

Some find the raised countertop to be a useful area in the kitchen. Its a great place to eat, an area for kids to do their homework while Mom cooks, and it gives the kitchen an intimate and somewhat private feel which separates the kitchen from the rest of the home. The most important factor to remember is when you makeover your kitchen, design your kitchen to fit your family's lifestyle for a functional work space and daily use.

Mr. and Mrs. Bellmeyer of Menifee wanted to get rid of their old Corian countertops and change the countertop design by adding a raised bar counter. The raised counter wall was constructed and granite counters and backslash were installed by the Southwest Granite team. They love their new kitchen and the raised bar counter is their favorite part of the kitchen!

Bathrooms with Granite Countertops

Bathrooms with Granite Countertops!

Follow this link to read and see photos of 15 Bathrooms with Granite Countertops!

Granite is generally considered the highest quality countertop material available, and if you're considering using granite for counter surfaces in your bathroom, you'll want to explore the tiers of bathroom granite countertop costs. Granite has a beautiful, natural appearance. It's incredibly durable and will resist chipping or scratching, and it's easy to clean. So it's no surprise granite is a popular choice for bathroom countertops. Along with all of its great qualities come associated costs, however. But don't despair if you're on a budget—you'll have a range of granite types to explore, at various price levels.

  • Basic granite countertops will generally cost around $60 per square foot for materials and installation. This type of granite will not be of the highest quality but it will still have a beautiful appearance at a budget price.
  • For premium granite based on color, supply and demand, you can expect to pay $65 - $70 per square foot. This is considered to be the most popular granite choice due to the wide range of colors.
  • Finally, on the high end of the scale, granite that is exotic or rare you can expect to pay up to $150 per linear foot for granite countertops.

Say NO to prefab Granite

Raw full size granite slabs vs. prefab slabs

Prefabs are produced in bulk, mainly in countries like China, and shipped to the United States at very low prices. These counters are also considered to be of reasonable cost, since the labor cost of custom fabrication is not really needed. The convenience of prefabs are great for the common and simple bathroom vanity, but are they equally economical in a kitchen?

The layout of a kitchen is the determining factor of whether prefabs are economical or not. A small galley kitchen might be easily re-modeled with prefabs, if one 8 foot stretch of granite can be installed along each side. This works because the two separately manufactured prefab granite countertops are most likely not from matching slabs of granite. In a galley kitchen, the walkway separating the two tops could be enough space to fool the eye into thinking that the prefabs are the exact same color.

Any custom kitchen will be hard to cover with prefabs as well. If there are wall outcrops, varied countertop widths, bar tops, or a peninsula, you will find that prefabricated countertops carry a high waste factor. Furthermore, while prefab peninsulas are generally available, you may find the cost per square foot of material to exceed what you would pay for raw slab material, even when you end up with a prefab that is bigger or smaller than what you needed.

Ultimately, a kitchen will look better with custom cut and fabricated granite slabs over the prefabricated counter. In order to get what you pay for, and be happy with your project, starting from scratch is really the best plan for stone kitchen countertops.

A message from the owner of Southwest Granite:

At Southwest Granite, we value our customers and we offer our customers the best products at the best price.  We recommend raw full size granite slabs that we will fabricate to your exact specifications and install at your home or office. You will pick your own unique slab, choose from many different edges and a finish that a prefab can never match. We will install prefab if that is what our customer requests, but please be aware that a prefab counter will have more seams because of the size restrictions of the available prefab slab. The colors are limited for prefab, no unique colors just generic colors. Unlike full size granite, typical prefab slabs come with finished edges on two or three sides, a square or bullnose edging only. You will have a unique, custom countertop, island, bbq, fireplace surround and more when you choose a raw full size Granite Slab.

Granite counter with Chiseled Edge

Chiseled Edge

This is an edge you don't see everywhere but it sure is stunning! Chiseled edge is one of the many edges available to finish your granite installation. We recommend this for outdoor kitchens and bbqs and also for indoor beverage/wine bars and fireplace. Lets not forget how nice this edge looks in a kitchen, bath or laundry room or for a desk/table tops.

The Chiseled edged is rough and looks like a naturally broken piece of granite.

Perhaps the most natural or rustic edge is chiseled. However it can have a crisp sharp look when paired with contemporary or modern design.

Below is a custom beveled edge, it has a chiseled edge and smooth edge. You can see the chiseled edge has some polishing done to smooth out the rough spots and also to help blend with the edge that is not chiseled.
