Homeowners Love Granite Kitchen Countertops

Are you planning a kitchen remodel in the near future? Are you considering Granite for your countertops? No matter what material you are considering we will give you the reasons why granite is and has been the popular choice among homeowners. Two well know reasons are because of their natural beauty and minimal maintenance. Keep reading to learn why more and more homeowners are installing granite countertops in their homes.

Granite Slabs are Unique

For homeowners looking for a countertop surface design that’s completely unique to their home, granite can be a great material. All granite slabs are unique.
Granite comes in many different colors to fit your design preferences and the interior design of your home. For example, black granite countertops give your kitchen a touch of sophistication and luxury.

Adds Value to Your Home

Whether you are looking to sell your home in the near future or you are planning on staying in your home for many years to come, there are many benefits of granite countertops. Not only do granite countertops add a classic ambiance to any kitchen, but they are also attractive to prospective home-buyers. For example, if a home-buyer is looking at two similar houses in the same price bracket, they are more likely to choose the home with newly-installed granite countertops
According to HGTV, minor kitchen remodels (like granite countertop installation) offer a return on investment of approximately 92.9%. To determine if granite countertops are the best kitchen remodel for your money, we recommend that you contact us to discuss your options. Replacing kitchen countertops can help improve the look of your home for years to come.
Low Maintenance Countertops
Maintenance for granite countertops is minimal. Simply clean your countertops with hot water and mild soap. Since granite is less porous than other countertop materials, such as marble, the chance of staining is significantly less. However, if you do stain the surface of your granite countertop, we recommend that you make a paste out of baking soda and water and gently try to scrub the stain out with a soft washcloth. This simple trick takes care of most granite countertop stains.
Sanitary Surfaces
Granite countertops are resistant against bacterial contamination. This means that you can prepare and cook with confidence, knowing that your family is protected from strains of bacteria living on your countertop surfaces. Of course, it’s also important to exercise food safety habits, such as cleaning kitchen countertops before and after use meal preparation and cooking.

5 Reasons to Add Granite Countertops to Your Home!

5 reasons why you should choose a granite!

Home remodeling projects are on the rise. According to the third annual Houzz & Home survey that compiles responses from homeowners across the nation to determine upcoming renovation trends, 22% of homeowners in the US will be updating their kitchen within the next two years. Of those projects, an incredible 89% will be an upgrade to new countertops. Granite countertops are a popular choice for a number of reasons, and here we outline why they are the perfect choice if you're planning a kitchen renovation or upgrade for your next home improvement project.
1. Resale value
According to Remodeling Magazine's 2014 Cost vs. Value report, remodeling your kitchen is one of the best projects for increasing the value of your home. Upgrading countertops can change the entire aesthetic, giving it a rich look and feel by creating an instantly upscale environment for prospective buyers. Even if you're not considering putting your home on the market in the near future, if and when you do, you can rest assured that your upgrade will pay dividends. Realtors nation-wide report that upgraded kitchens make a home easier to sell. As the room in your home that's worth the post per square foot, the upgrade is worth the investment.
2. Durability
It's probably not surprising to learn that natural stone is one of the most durable, damage-resistant materials out there. Most times it comes with a lifetime guarantee because it is scratch and chip-resistant, and extremely difficult to damage. The surface will never freeze or grow mold or mildew. In addition, it's heat-resistant and won't ever melt or warp if you set hot pots or pans directly on it.
3. "Green" bandwagon
Granite countertops are 100% natural, and are a cornerstone of green construction. You can rest assured that the stone is an environmentally safe and non-toxic material to have in your home. This is a trendy choice and since each stone is different, your kitchen will have its own distinct style and texture thanks to your natural addition.
4. Easy-to-clean and maintain
You can clean them easily with soap and water or glass cleaner such as Windex without fear of causing damage. All that you need to maintain the beautiful surface is a topical sealant applied annually to keep the surface fresh and shiny.
5. Cost-effective
It might surprise you to learn that this natural stone option can fit in your budget. By working directly with the fabricator/installer, you're guaranteed great rates on the material. If your looking to install a small granite countertop, ask your contractor about granite remnants. Typically granite remnants are free and all you will pay for is the labor. Don't forget to factor into the price the value granite adds.
No matter the reason for your kitchen renovation, a countertop upgrade should be on your list for the year. It adds value and beauty to your home, and with just a little maintenance, the natural stone will look fantastic for years to come.

Full Size Granite Slabs vs. PreFab Granite

A message from the owner of Southwest Granite.
At Southwest Granite, we value our customers and we offer our customers the best products at the best price.  We offer both raw full size granite slabs and prefab slabs.  Both are nice but one is better in every way! Full size granite slabs are and always will be the best choice, its like comparing a diamond ring to crushed diamonds or cubic zirconia ring.
We recommend raw full size granite slabs over prefab because we want you to have the best. Only a full size granite slab can be fabricated to your exact specifications. Edge detail can be unique with curves, chiseled, angled, and more. With prefab granite there are limited choices in colors, edges and there are size restrictions. When investing in your home choose raw full size granite, for its durability, beauty and value that will not only be unique but it will increase the value of your home instantly!

Say NO to prefab Granite

Raw full size granite slabs vs. prefab slabs

Prefabs are produced in bulk, mainly in countries like China, and shipped to the United States at very low prices. These counters are also considered to be of reasonable cost, since the labor cost of custom fabrication is not really needed. The convenience of prefabs are great for the common and simple bathroom vanity, but are they equally economical in a kitchen?

The layout of a kitchen is the determining factor of whether prefabs are economical or not. A small galley kitchen might be easily re-modeled with prefabs, if one 8 foot stretch of granite can be installed along each side. This works because the two separately manufactured prefab granite countertops are most likely not from matching slabs of granite. In a galley kitchen, the walkway separating the two tops could be enough space to fool the eye into thinking that the prefabs are the exact same color.

Any custom kitchen will be hard to cover with prefabs as well. If there are wall outcrops, varied countertop widths, bar tops, or a peninsula, you will find that prefabricated countertops carry a high waste factor. Furthermore, while prefab peninsulas are generally available, you may find the cost per square foot of material to exceed what you would pay for raw slab material, even when you end up with a prefab that is bigger or smaller than what you needed.

Ultimately, a kitchen will look better with custom cut and fabricated granite slabs over the prefabricated counter. In order to get what you pay for, and be happy with your project, starting from scratch is really the best plan for stone kitchen countertops.

A message from the owner of Southwest Granite:

At Southwest Granite, we value our customers and we offer our customers the best products at the best price.  We recommend raw full size granite slabs that we will fabricate to your exact specifications and install at your home or office. You will pick your own unique slab, choose from many different edges and a finish that a prefab can never match. We will install prefab if that is what our customer requests, but please be aware that a prefab counter will have more seams because of the size restrictions of the available prefab slab. The colors are limited for prefab, no unique colors just generic colors. Unlike full size granite, typical prefab slabs come with finished edges on two or three sides, a square or bullnose edging only. You will have a unique, custom countertop, island, bbq, fireplace surround and more when you choose a raw full size Granite Slab.

Granite Edges

GRANITE EDGES

WHAT EDGE WILL YOU CHOOSE?

Granite edges for countertops are available in many shapes. The detail of the shape of granite countertop edges will affect cost, function, and cleanability.
Stone edges are a design element that you get to choose prior to fabrication. The edge or profile that you choose can have a dramatic impact on the look and feel of your granite counter tops and your kitchen.
Granite countertop edges can be simple or complex, with curves or sharp angles.
Edge names can vary depending on the granite fabricator or contractor.
If you see an edge you want, take a picture and show us to ensure you get exactly what you want.

Chiseled Edge also know as Rock Pitch is popular for rustic designs and outdoors style edge.
It can also be slightly polished to smooth the sharp edges a bit.
